Making America laugh (ruefully) again

ha ha

Thank you Mr. President.

Thank you for taking the time to make America laugh, despite the many terrible and potentially apocalyptic things going on throughout the world,

You are trying to entertain us, right? That’s the only reasonable explanation for your demand that ESPN apologize for a network employee’s Tweet.

The tweet:

The demand:

The general reaction to the demand:

Of course, even if those who aren’t 100 percent convinced you personally are a White Supremacist (though some of your most fervent followers are), we can all be amused that you, especially you, would demand an apology for an insult.

Remember when you said this about your predecessor:

“An ‘extremely credible source’ has called my office and told me that @BarackObama’s birth certificate is a fraud,” Trump tweeted in August 2012.

And this:

“No, I meant he’s the founder of ISIS. I do. He was the most valuable player. I give him the most valuable player award,”

And this all-timer:

You’re killing us. In the comedic sense, I mean.

We snickered when your White House spokesperson tried to get Jemele Hill fired for that Tweet. We roared when, having failed, you personally demanded an apology from Hill’s employer, ESPN.

Though it’s true you didn’t laugh much during the White House Correspondents Dinner a few years ago when a guy you had been kidding (you were kidding, right?) got a few laughs at your expense, your gift for absurdist humor certainly came through with the demand for an apology.

After all, you’re the the man who’s tweeted insults about more than 365 people places and things (so far), and verbally abused political enemies and allieswithout ever apologizing for anything you’ve communicated.

Not for your infamous remarks about assaulting women.

Not for accusing a political rival’s father of killing President Kennedy.

If laughter (however rueful) really is the best medicine, I guess that makes you America’s doctor.

A modest proposal: Rather than Hail to the Chief, to set the appropriate tone for future personal appearances, I propose you enter to this.

Thank you, Mr. President. You are, singularly, hilarious.
